Dr. Darlene Perez-Brown along with Heather Fritz MSOT student participated in a wheelchair distribution project in San Jose, Costa Rica. Approximately 200 wheelchairs, walkers and other adaptive equipment were provided to adults and children with disabilities. Each wheelchair was modified and adapted to meet the specific needs of each individual. This experience consisted of hard labor but the reward was great indeed as we saw the smiles and tears of happiness. Thanks to this project people who could not afford a wheelchair, receive the gift of mobility, proper positioning and independence. A wheelchair provides clients with freedom which affects not only their own quality of life but the quality of life of the whole family. We had the opportunity to work with extremely challenging cases under very challenging circumstances such as, rain and heat. As practitioners our skills where enhanced and our spirit re-energized as we provided people with special needs one of the basic and essential resources in order to promote engagement in the occupations of life. That’s what Occupational Therapy is all about. I will echo the motto of our hosting organization Moviendo Esperanzas: “Llevar y sembrar esperanza, donde solo existen sueños . . . To take and plant hope where only dreams exist.Heather's Words: "It is a truly life changing experience to be part of something that touches so many lives, the most significant impression was the realization that we have the ability to take what we learn in school here and apply it anywhere in the world to change a life, I think everyone should participate in a trip like this. I was touched by the human capacity for giving, serving, and loving our fellow man."
